U of M team receives $ 30,000 to solve food system problems

A team from the University of Manitoba, Edmonton Food Bank and Baranowski & Sons Nutrition is one of five winning teams to receive US $ 30,000 from the Danone Institute of North America “One Planet. One Health ”, a grant program that promotes resilient and sustainable local food systems.

Grant funds will be used to develop and execute their community project, titled Building a Post-Pandemic Sustainable Food System: From Edmonton.

Team members include Paul D. Larson, PhD, professor of supply chain management at the University of Manitoba and Robert V. Parsons, PhD, lecturer at the U of M.

Food Banks Canada reported that there had been over a million visits to food banks across the country as of March 2019. Additionally, COVID-19 has had a huge impact on commercial food supply chains and non-profit. The project merges supply chain, sustainability and nutrition perspectives to study the food supply chain during and after the pandemic. The aim is to facilitate an urgent move towards more sustainable food supply chains – supply chains that provide nutritionally balanced and culturally appropriate foods while striving to reduce the carbon footprint, as well as food distribution costs.

Selected from nominees from the United States and Canada, the 2021 laureates were recognized for their innovation and impact, as well as for how they address the evolving dietary challenges that have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic .

“The social and economic effects of the pandemic have amplified the fragility and inequalities of our food systems, and 2021 grant recipients are putting in place community-based programs that can mitigate the impacts on vulnerable communities,” said Leslie Lytle, PhD, president of the Danone Institute. North America and Assistant Professor in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and the University of Minnesota. “We are inspired by their commitment to creating a healthier world through food and we look forward to helping them advance their programs in the coming months with the ‘One Planet.’ One Health Initiative grant.

In addition to grant funding, the five teams will participate in trainings and workshops with Danone Institute North America executives and partners over the next two years to support the development and implementation of their projects. Next spring, a team will also be awarded an additional $ 10,000 for the strongest communications plan, according to the board of directors of the Danone Institute of North America.
