COVID-19 disrupts Vietnam’s food chain

HANOI, VIETNAM – Large outbreaks of COVID-19 in recent months in Vietnam have led the government to increase social distancing measures, causing disruption in the country’s agricultural food chain, according to a report by the Global Agricultural Information Network of the Foreign Agricultural Service of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

“Trade contacts have signaled difficulties in interprovincial movements and the delayed transportation of all agricultural produce from farm to market, making it difficult for farmers to sell produce,” the USDA said.

Widespread closures and reduced operations in the hotel and restaurant sector in the 19 southern provinces have resulted in lower demand for domestic pork and poultry products, according to the report.

In light of declining feed demand from the livestock industry and reduced feed operations, USDA has revised its feed demand estimates for 2021 and 2022 at 26.2 million tonnes and 27.5 million tonnes, respectively.

The USDA revised its maize consumption estimates for 2021-2022 for Vietnam down 150,000 tonnes to 14.35 million in anticipation of lower feed demand in the second half of 2021.

At the same time, he revised wheat consumption up to 3.65 million tonnes as the feed industry turns to wheat as an alternative to corn.
